Our newest Employee Spotlight is Steve Zaferakis, Director of Assessments and Architecture here at Armoured One. Steve grew up in the Syracuse suburb of Liverpool before going on to college at Clarkson University, Onondaga Community College, and Brockport State University. He and his wife of 15 years, Karen, reside in Baldwinsville with their two daughters, Alexia and Victoria, and their dog Stanley. Steve and his wife have been involved in martial arts for more than 30 years. Of his family, he says, “My family has been the biggest influence by far. Their support, patience, and guidance over the years have allowed me to serve my community, achieve goals, and maintain priorities.”
Prior to joining the Armoured One team, Steve worked for the federal government doing Geographic Information Systems and Emergency Management, as well as Fire Protection Engineering with C&S Companies. He and his brother Mike also owned and operated On Scene Mapping for 25 years, providing maps and preplans to the emergency services and school districts. Steve is a Retired Life Member and Past Deputy Chief for the Moyers Corners Fire Department, where he served for 24 years. It was during this time as a fire chief where he met our CEO Tom Czyz, who was a member of the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Department. Regarding his time in the fire service, Steve said, “One of my favorite activities while serving my community was conducting annual school fire/safety inspections and teaching fire safety to the kids at the elementary schools.”
Driving to work one morning, Steve got a call from Tom asking if he would like to be a part-time trainer. He jumped at the chance to join the Armoured One team. Of his start with the training team, Steve said, “I was instantly hooked and loved to see the positive responses from teachers and staff members. Since my wife is a teacher, and my kids are still in school, joining Armoured One and their mission to save lives is truly my calling.”
He has since moved into a new position, but enjoys getting involved in different aspects of the business. He said, “I am also extremely proud to help with the renovations of our almost century-old buildings at 386 North Midler Avenue. Buildings that were once slated to be demolished are now called home to an awesome team dedicated to saving lives.”
Steve’s primary focus at Armoured One is the Security Assessment division, but he’s also involved in many other aspects of the day to day business. Steve oversees the Health & Safety of our headquarters and field installers; conducts active shooter training for ONE Training; conducts research and analysis of active shooter attacks; serves on the Board of Directors at the NSSPA; assists the Armoured One Architectural Team; performs design and engineering consulting, product demonstrations, policy development, information technology, and employee recruitment and retention. He is also never one to turn down getting to attack our glass during demonstrations.
For the remainder of 2021, Steve says, “I am looking forward to conducting security risk assessments at schools in Tennessee, South Carolina, Virginia, and New York. Also, hopefully getting back to in-person instruction to help empower staff members safely. With the addition of some strategic new hires, I’m very excited to see where our team takes us.”
Thank you Steve for all you have done and continue to do at Armoured One. You are a truly valuable member of the team and we appreciate all the ways you step up to ensure our success.
